Why tallow

An old ingredient, back in the jar.

Tallow went into soap and candles for centuries. Today it is back in skin care for its rich, buttery feel. Here is what it is, in plain terms.

    What it is

    Beef tallow is rendered beef fat: the fat is gently melted, strained and cooled into a smooth, creamy solid.

  2. 02

    How it compares

    Tallow is made mostly of triglycerides. In human sebum, the oil your skin makes, triglycerides and their fatty acids are also the largest share: about 57% in one published review.

    How it feels

    Tallow is solid at room temperature and softens as it warms, so a little, rubbed between your fingertips, turns soft and easy to spread.
